Re: Sharepoint licensing for SBS 2003

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Thank you very much for your help today. It has clarified a lot things...
Unfortunately if the database of users is expected to be in the 5000 range
then the client is going to have to fork out a big chunk of money to make
this project work....

<sigh> well at least I have some answers for them....

Thanks again... Cheers!

You're correct, you would also have to transition away from SBS to regular
products

I hope that is a solution that would work but would you have a moment to
explain how/why the licensing would be solved for an SBS environment? When
I
looked deeper for more information, I found references that indicated that
any kind of authentication will use a license until that object logs off.
So
if there are 150 users accessing a single Sharepoint Portal Server at the
same time then it still will use up all the CALS....

Thanks!!

You would add an additional Server, install Sharepoint Portal Server on
it.

When you say move away from SBS and use Sharepoint Portal, do you mean
that
the existing SBS server can stay in place and the Portal will take care
of
the licensing issue? OR that the server needs to be upgraded to Server
2003
Standard. Is there a particular preference for using the PORTAL rather
than
just SP services on a single box?

Can you clarify what the common terms are now for the Sharepoint
services...
My understanding is that Sharepoint 2.0 could be as a standalone
service
on a
single server OR install the Portal which would manage multiple servers
hosting Sharepoint services. Is the Sharepoint Portal still called
"Portal"
in 2007 environment.... I haven't exactly had the time to fully get the
whole
picture of where the 2007 bits and pieces fit yet...

Thanks for your time in answering. :))

If users are going to be required to logon to Sharepoint it requires a
CAL,
and since everyone is comeing from many devices around the
world...device
cal won't work

this would be per user.

This client would have to migrate away from SBS and then go with
Sharepoint
Portal

I have an SBS client who wants to provide sharepoint services for
outside
users - all accounts will only access Sharepoint on the SBS server.
There
are
a LOT of accounts ( > 1000 ). I would like to know if the licensing
is
set
to
PER DEVICE does that mean all user accounts accessing the server
would
only
use 1 CAL?

This is the only solution that I can come up with currently without
doing
a
transition to standalone Server 2003 products.

As well, how can one tell how a set of CAL's has been applied? What
tells
me
it is Per Device or Per User?
