Re: Exchange SMTP using DNS not working

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

I realize that the world says that an attack will happen pretty quickly but
I would install the second nic...run ICW not worry about ISA for the time
being. Try to send an email and see if it works...if yes...then you have
your answer...its in the FW app

If it doesn't work...put the firewall box back in place and we go back to
troubleshooting the SBS/Exchange piece

Yeah unfortunately that will mean adding a second nic to the box and
configuring windows firewall. they only bought the standard (non premium)
edition so I can't set up ISA on the box unless I download an eval version
so
this will have to be a very brief test.

See my comment to dave below about poking it with a stick...

Thanks!

I would take the FW unit out of the link and see if it works...would help

Yeah. This is why this is frustrating as all get out....just doesn't
make
a
lot of sense...

Do you have the same firewall h/w that the client has?

I did run the wizard and it went by with out a hitch. If you're
refering
to
the local DNS server then yes, it is using the same forwarders that
I
use
on
my personal network (since we're on teh same ISP and subnet, the
configs
are
almost identical in terms of how our settings are configured).

Yes we have configured the internal domain name the same as the
internal
(not best practice I know) as we thought that may have been the
problem
initially (we did a rebuild earlier today of teh enironment since
its a
new
company/environment).

IP Config from server:

Windows IP Configuration

Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : avserver
Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : AVTechnologiesLLC.com
Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Hybrid
IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
DNS Suffix Search List. . . . . . : AVTechnologiesLLC.com

Ethernet adapter Server Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Compaq NC3163 Fast Ethernet NIC
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-02-A5-09-7A-1B
DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.2
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.2
Primary WINS Server . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.2

Thanks for the help!

did you run the Connect to Email and Internet Wizard

If you check the DNS server, do you have DNS forwarders

can you post the output from running "ipconfig /all" on the server

I have an SBS Server 2003 R2 config set up consisting of a single
NIC.
The
network has a small FW appliance and all ports that need to be
open
are
open
(25, 443 for OWA, etc)

I can recieve emails all day long and internal company email
works
fine.
When I try to send to ANY external address however it queues up
and
just
sits
there. I have the appropriate records set up at the companies
registrar
and
I can see no reason why this is happening.

My own personal network is configured almost identical to ths
companies
in
terms of connection to the internet, DNS registrations at the
registrar.
We're using the same ISP (we're even on the same subnet). The
only
difference betwee the two networks is that this company is using
SBS
and I
am
not, my servers are seperate.

I'm really confused here as I can see no reason why this is not
working.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
