Re: Slow network

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

I would stop all the BES services. If it still acts slow then it may
not be BES. Probably nothing to do with BES.

Make sure your AV is not scanning your database files.

I have been told by wise people that a better config for databases
might be 2 raid 1 containers. I thnk they have stated that you need
more than 3 hard drives to get Raid 5 to work fast and even then it is
not the fastest raid configuration. That said I have bult some similar
spec servers some with two Raid 1 arrays and others with Raid 5 using
3 hard drives. It seems that the Raid 1 is faster.

I have an account that runs some nix workstations. What nix I do not
know. They are the chatiest machines I have ever seen that were not
infected. The server nic light blinks like crazy when those two nix
boxes are around. The server nic slows down a good bit when those two
boxes are unplugged. I also see tons of smb traffic from the main
office that I think is related to the client applications that run on
the Windows machines that try to talk to the files the nix boxes place
on the server.

Another SBS running BES, Exchange and a SQL app with a database for
every company they manage. About 30 databases. The SQL app requires an
application server which the workstations talk to. Performance is just
not that great event though every business is a small business and the
servers are pretty powerful. I guess I am suggesting the app is not
well written. Or maybe the tables are not properly indexed. Or
whatever makes SQL sing has not been done. On the other hand I have
another SQL app which sings running on a SBS with Exchange, ISA, and
some other minor applications.

Nice server and workstation specs.

SOrry about that Jim. I was thinking more along the line that this is a
network usage problem as this network has been upand running for several
months now. Her is the requested info.

CPU - Intel Xeon 3.0Ghz
RAM - 3.5Gb
HDD - 3 146.8Gb Ultra 320 SCSI hotswappable drive configured in RAID5
NICs - 2 X HP NC7782 Gigabit Server Adaptors

Server 2003 TS Server

HP ProLiant ML350
CPU - Intel Xeon 2.2Ghz
RAM - 3.5Gb
HDD - 3 36.4 Ultra 320 SCSI hotswappable drive configured in RAID5
NIC - HP NC7760 Gigabit Server Adaptor

Switch - Linksys SRW2048 10/100/1000 Gigabit Switch

Main applications:

Maxwell Management Suite - this is server based app. located on the SBS
system.
EBM Network - this is server based app. located on the SBS system.
ConEst - Application on the TS Server and it runs via TS.
Blackberry Enterprise Server - located on the TS Server.

Yes the lights on the switch seem to be going crazy.

I have had some users complain that the whole system seems to slow down
incredibly especially while using Maxwell or one of the other server based
appications. I have noticed a definite lag time while on the net or
retrieving e-mail.

I think that the problem could be related to the BES application. We
received it via promo in December and they sy our free tech support has run
out. I am trying to get the renewal approved by the accountant at this time.

I noticed in the Event Viewer on the TS Server that there are many warings
from Blackberry Messaging. They are all Event ID 2000, wiht the Description
of - (various user names) GetRIMMeetingReq Failed for Loong
TermEntryID=280674 in LaunchCallHelpAndGetResults.

You neglected to give the specs of the server. Processors, hard
drives, ram, brand of nics and such. You did not mention the brand of
switch. You did not mention the applications your are using. You did
not mention what qualifies as slow. Are the activity lights on the
switch going crazy? Does wireshark show any crazy stuff happening on
the server nics?

You did not post an ipconfig/all from the server and a workstation.
Often a missconfigured few things in the ips and dns can cause great
problems.

Howdy. Our network has been running slow intermittently over the last

recommend to check out what is causing the slow down?

We are running SBS2003 Premium (w/ Exchange), a Server 2003 R2 as a TS,
and
all of our work stations are XP Pro (updated). We have approx. 25 users.
The
network inside the office is all CAT6 cable with either 1000 or 100Mb
cards.
Gigabit switch and NICs on the servers. The SBS server has 2 NICs.

Thanks.
