SP1 Installation Issues

While preparing for the DST changes, I stumbled across a customer who still
had SBS 2003 with no SP1 applied.
So, I downloaded the necessary software and started the first patch, Windows
Server 2003 Service Pack 1. The file extraction completed successfully, I
accepted the screen to backup my files, and started the installation.
The install goes all the way through until it reaches the cleanup stage. It
sits there for awhile working on something, then abruptly closes.
The last line in the svcpack.log states: 1955.750: MigrateHotfixes: Return
code: 0
The last hotfix it lists as migrated is 925486.
From what I see, the system properties doesn't show that it was upgraded toSP1 at this point, which it normally should even though I haven't finished
the patch process. However, in Add/Remove Programs, the service pack is
listed for removal there. When trying to remove via this method, the
removal doesn't even start. I have to uninstall via the spuninst.exe file
in the Windows subdirectory corresponding to the service pack.
The uninstall for the service pack via this method completes successfully
and the server reboots with no major issues. However, now it appears that
the uninstall doesn't actually uninstall or fix everything. IIS is
reporting application pool crashes now and the Microsoft Exchange Connector
for POP3 Mailboxes downloads email, but it never reaches the user.
Anyone have any suggestions on where to go from here?
I'd appreciate some input! Thanks in advance!
Stephen Harrington
