RE: 2 alerts keep showing up

Hi jared,

From the description, I understand that you received disk activity alert
and Allocated Memory Alert from the SBS server. If I am off base, please
don't hesitate to let me know.

Generally speaking, this is a performance alert regarding the hard drive.
If the alert constantly occurs, it can indicate server performance issue
(hardware bottleneck due to disk performance) or hardware corruption.
However, if the alert rarely occurs, you may safely ignore the alert
because it's caused by the server busy.

Generally speaking, since the SBS 2003 server is an integrated solution
including multiple services such as Exchange, SQL, ISA, Windows
infrastructure etc, the high memory usage is expected. Please press
Ctrl+Alt+Del and click 'Task Manager'. You will see the current commit
memory size. The commit memory number there is not the physical memory
occupation rate. It's combined with physical memory and page file usage
rate. You may find that the total commit memory size could be larger than
the physical memory size of the server.

A memory allocation threshold is configured on the particular monitored
object. When the average value of the object (for example, the committed
memory size) reaches the threshold, the server will send an alert e-mail to
the admin. For the memory allocation size, the default threshold is
2147483648.

This memory allocation value is depending on the current server load,
physical memory size and page file size on the SBS server. For a SBS server
with large physical memory (for example 2GB), it's expected that the
committed bytes is high. The committed bytes counter indicates the Memory
allocated to programs and the operating system. Technically speaking, some
processes such as Exchange store process (store.exe) and SQL database
engine (sqlservr.exe) could use as much memory as they can. This causes
high memory usage behavior on a SBS server.

The alert is triggered when the Allocated Memory size is larger than
2,147,483,648 bytes. This number is static and is configured similarly on
all SBS 2003 server installations. This number may not be representing the
true baseline for that particular server installation. If you can confirm
that everything is working as expected, you can change the counter to match
that system.

To change the counter value, please open the Monitoring and Reporting
snap-in in Server Management console. Under 'Change Alert Notifications',
select Performance Counters. Write down the Counter Average value for
Allocated Memory. You may they modify that entry and replace the default
threshold with the average value (We usually suggest 130%~140% average
value).

The best way to identify the memory threshold on a particular SBS server is
to use the performance monitor utility. We can use the utility to capture a
long term memory and process status (5 to 10 days) and then analyze the
performance log to get the average memory usage of the SBS server. Then, we
can define the memory allocation threshold of the SBS server. Generally
speaking, we can use the 130%~ 140% average values as the threshold.

Click 'Change Alert notifications' link in 'Monitoring and Reporting'
snap-in. In 'Performance counters' tab, open the properties of 'Allocated
Memory'. Increase the threshold number. (130%-140% counter average).

Since the SBS server is an integrated solution for small business
environment, it's expected that the server box is heavy loaded. If the
issue constantly occurs, you may capture the server performance log to see
if this is a hardware bottleneck on the SBS server. For detailed
information regarding the performance log, please refer to the following KB

In addition, I would like to mention that if there is 1GB or above RAM
installed on the SBS server, it's recommended to add /3GB switch in
boot.ini file so that the memory allocation will be improved:

Anyway, please gather the following information to identify if this is a
REAL problem on the SBS server:

1. Do you experience any REAL problem on the server? Such as Share/web
inaccessible, or server extremely low response or even hang?

2. Go to the SBS server, open Event viewer. Do you see any disk related
warning or error events in the system log?

3. Schedule a reboot at non-business time. After rebooting the server, will
you still receive the alert?

4.Let's capture the following counters:

Paging counters (under the Memory object): Pages/sec, Page Reads/sec, Page
Writes/sec
Usage counters: % Disk Time, % Disk Read Time, % Disk Write Time, % Idle
Time, Disk Reads/sec, Disk Writes/sec, Disk Transfers/sec
Queue-length counters: Avg. Disk Queue Length, Avg. Disk Read Queue Length,
Avg. Disk Write Queue Length, Current Disk Queue Length
Throughput counters: Disk Bytes/sec, Disk Read Bytes/sec, Disk Write
Bytes/sec

You may create a performance log, then reboot the computer. After rebooting
the computer, open performance monitor and enable the log. Monitor the
server until you get the disk activity alert. Send the file to me for
further research.send the log to me at v-jaluo@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

I appreciate your time. I am happy to be of assistance and look forward to
your reply.

Have a nice day!
