Can anybody tellme how to use the integral MS UPS service without installing
the UPS manufacturer proprietry software?
I have the service set to auto but it instantly fails?
I use the built-in Windows UPS support on all the SBSs I support and it
works well. Every server I support has experienced at least one power
failure and was gracefully shut down by the UPS.
Many newer UPSs no longer require the Windows UPS service - especially
when they use a USB connection to the server. Instead, they use a
"Human Interface Devices" (HID) connection. If you attempt to start the
UPS service, it acts as you found: instantly shuts down. This does NOT
necessarily mean the UPS is improperly connected or not working.
I use APC UPSs exclusively. After connecting the USB cable to the
computer and booting up, it Just Works. You can open the Device Manager
and expand Human Interface Devices to confirm the UPS is listed. If
necessary, you can go into Control Panel | Power Options to adjust the
configuration. I normally go to the Alarms tab and increase the power
level at which a shutdown will occur to 25% to ensure there is plenty of
battery power to complete the shutdown.
