hi,
The monitor process should probably take a very small slice of
CPU to read the relevant data.
I'm guessing that it's a hardware-related, driver, WMI issue.
What brand is the server, or what config have you set in BIOS
wrt memory?

They are Intel Xeon 3.2 GHz machines with 2 Gig of RAM. In general they
are
running at less than 20 percent processor utilization. With hourly spikes
to
100%. 2 of the SBS's only have 4 clients' so I am pretty sure it is not
an
overall machine hardware problem.

What are the specs on these machines as I don't see this?
And you lose a lot of monitoring info when you do that...

I have multiple SBS's running at different client sites. We began to
have
complaints about periodic e-mail slowness. After quite a bit of
investigation we found it was related to the "Collect server performace
data"
scheduled task. When you install monitoring and select the performance
reports options this task is added. I assume it gathres the
performance data
and puts it in the SQL database used to generate the reports. By
defualt it
is scheduled to run at 45 minutes past the hour every hour. What I
have seen
is that it runs for at least 5 minutes and uses 100% CPU during that 5
minutes. The time period it runs appears to grow over time. During
the 5
minutes it runs server performance (exchange, iis, file retrieval) is
sluggish.
Has anybody else seen this. Does anybody have a solution. For now I
unistalled monitoring which removes the scheduled task
All servers are running SBS 2003 sp1
.
