Hi compsonic,
Member server would be the correct choice, and it will be a file server.
Many of your questions will be answered in this document:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=6f4015f2-7606-4eaa-828a-00b8df6bd999&displaylang=en
But there are some differences between SBS 2k and SBS 2k3. You might be able to find a similar document for SBS2k, or perhaps try the SBS2k newsgroup.

We are running SBS2000 Server on 1 box. We added a second box with
Windows 2003 Server R2 and joined it to the domain. We have a couple
questions:
1. Concerning the role of this server: The primary & only purpose of
adding this server is that a MRP software package that runs a
PervasiveSQL-based application will soon be installed on this server.
All current clients on the SBS2000 domain need to access this
application. There will be a separate client install on each of the
workstations.
Question: We thought we would be assigning "Application Server" as a
role, but when we went to do that, it describes this role as meant for
"build, deploy XML Web, etc. So we instead chose to assign it as a
"File Server". Is this correct?
Question: We often see these types of server additions referred to as
"Member Servers". Is that a specific setting, assignment ? And if so,
where do we set that up--on the SBS box or on this new Server?
2. Concerning Licensing: We understand that we have to add the same
number of client licenses that are on the SBS box to this server. How
do we specifically do that???
Thanks
.
