Re: SBS 2003 Premium R2 server becomes more unstable, page file grows to enormous size

I would diagnose this before changing the configuration of anything. In
particular, you should never attempt to limit memory usage by Exchange
Server.

I'd start with the event logs - anything in any of them that helps?

In Task Manager, go to the Processes tab and sort on "Mem Usage." What
processes are using over 100,000 K of RAM?

Hey guys,

This is the first time that I've posted to this forum, but I've read a
ton of articles and chats to try to diagnose the problems that we are
seeing on our server. We setup our server in house (SBS 2003 Premium
R2 w/ Service Pack 1) and aren't running too many applications, but as
time goes on, the server seems to get less and less stable. It
appears as though the server is struggling with a memory problem also,
but it seems as though we have plenty of physical memory and
processing power to handle what we need. Any suggestions that anybody
here might have would be really helpful.

Our company is using a single server for the following:
- Outlook Web Access
- VPN connectivity
- Exchange
- Sharepoint Intranet website (although we really don't use this at
all yet)
- Would like to host BCM running as a SQL server instance (have SQL
2005)
- DNS controller
- Antigen for antivirus (antispam seems to suck too much memory
currently)
- File Server
- 12 users which connect mostly from the LAN, but sometimes through
VPN

Running on:
- HP Proliant ML370
- 2x Intel Xeon 3.06 GHz
- 3.00 GB RAM
- Drive E: (2x 36GB drives in Raid 1) for OS (33.9GB total, 17.8 GB
free)
- Drive F: (4x 146GB drives in Raid 5) for file sharing (273GB total,
144 GB free)

We have all of the above working currently but they are extremely
unstable and often require reboots during the day and each morning so
that everything works as it ought to. This is becoming extremely
frustrating. I have searched online and have tried to reconfigure
both SQL and Exchange to operate in a fixed memory constraint, but
can't seem to find the tools and/or utilities that the whitepapers
say. To give an example, I've got about 10GB of total physical memory
between my virtual memory and my RAM, and the Task Manager is showing
9.77GB of PF Usage.

Any thoughts? Where can I start to troubleshoot this problem? Do I
need more RAM? Do I need a larger allotment of Virtual memory?

Seth
