Hi, I have been using SBS SP1 on Win Sever 2003 with Exchange 2003
for about 1 year plus. (single server) Never had any issue with
Exchange access within our office and with OWA access outside our
office (over public internet) But I have never been able to get the
rpc-http connection to work outside our office.
I have read every ounce of docs on technet and microsoft.com about
setting up Rpc-http and meticulously followed the instructions
including:
Hmmm. Well, honestly, SBS has this ability built in. You don't need to do
any of the the steps below to make it work. Had you tried using it before
you went to all this trouble?
I can't say for sure, but it's possible that what you've changed, may mean
it will not work.
1. configure the rpc-http backend server in exchange system manager
2. install and configure rpc proxy and confirm creation of /rpc virt.
dir. in IIS
3. assure only ssl connection over 443 for /rpc virtual directory
4. purchase a cert. and verify that users can connect to /rpc
directory without getting prompted for cert. in any way
5. assure iis is allowing the rpcproxy.dll web extension.
6. assure firewall (on linksys router) has port 80 and 443 open and
forwarding to SBS machine
7. modified the value of
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\rpc\rpcproxy\validports to
point to port 6001-6002 and 6004
8. added a reg_multi_sz value of 'NSPI interface protocol sequences'=
NCACN_HTTP:6004 to the key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\services\NTDS
But no matter what, rpc does not work over http. Just says "Exchange
server is unavailable"
I have also done the following diagnostics:
A. start outlook with the /rpcdiag switch.
B. check Event viewer to see if the IIS sucessfully loads the RPC.
In step A, I notice that inside the office the outlook goes ahead and
starts connecting using tcpip not http and is successful. I dont know
how to force an rpc over http connection inside the office???
In the Exchange proxy setup, you have two tickbox options (over fast, over
slow, etc) - tick both.
From
outside the office, it does attempt to use http but fails on the
first step.
In step B there is absolutely no messages in my event viewer relating
to IIS. Where am i supposed to be looking for these?
I am not running ISA server. All my users are XPSP2 with outlook 2003
Recently I upgraded to SBS 2003 R2 hoping that somehow magically the
problem would go away. But it didn't. I also tried connecting a test
pc running vista rtm w/outlook 2007 just for the heck of it and got
the same errors as with XP SP2 with oultook 2003.
appreciate any additional clues you can provide / diagnostics I can
run. I had a hunch that it was the IIs config. and/or some prob. with
the cert. because that appears to be the plurality of issues on this
forum, but now that i cannot even get rcp-http to work inside the
office, I am really lost.
