Re: Logging on remotely to Console session?

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Chester,

What's your patch level? This is reminiscent of problems experienced in
late 2005 after Microsoft released update 902400. Check out the link:
http://www.computerworld.com/blogs/node/1173. I found this and various
other (possibly) useful hits by googleing your error message.

Never had this error before. I have had probs with RDP, tho -- for some
reason, beginning mid-last year, some of my clients would crash & reboot
when I'd try to log on via RDP. I could connect to the login screen just
fine, but actually trying to login would cause the client to spontaneously
reboot, and on next login Windows would display the "Recovered from a
serious error" message. Never have figured that one out, but I haven't had
much time to troubleshoot it and I have other means of remote login so it
hasn't been a priority.

When you say it gets you nowhere, could you be more specific? I log into
the console session of SBS all the time using one of two ways; I either
use RWW, or the Remote Desktops mmc under XP's Administrative Tools, both
of which let you tick a checkbox stating you want to connect to console.
I wasn't clear from your post whether it tries to connect and fails/times
out, or if something else is going on.

Cheers,

BJ

Brian, thanks for the reply. Sorry, I should have been more specific.

When I use RWW, I click on the Optional Settings link, and select "Log on
to, or resume the console session of the remote computer."

When I click connect, it starts to connect, (shows me the login on the
server screen, and I can enter username/password) then I get this error:
"Error connecting to existing session for Adminstrator (Id 0). The
operation completed sucessfully." The option is to click OK, which takes
me bak to the RWW screen, or if I don't do anything, it takes me back
there as well.

That is if I use the Administrator account. (Administrator as the
username, and the password associated with that account.)

If I use my credentials (chester.hull as the username, and yes, I'm an
Administrator on the domain), I get this message:
"The user DOMAIN\administrator is logged on locally to this computer. The
user has been idle for 0 minutes. The desktop is unlocked. If you
continue, this user's Windows Session will end, and any un-saved data will
be lost. Do you want to continue?"

Again, to iterate (or reiterate!)...the point of logging onto the Console
session is because we have a program that is required to run all the time
on the server. The only way that program will run, is if we log on to the
server, and start the program. (It won't run as a service). So if I log
the administrator off, then that program shuts down.

So I'd really like to be able to log in, verify that program is running,
and be able to access the server and that program, from a remote
workstation.

I thought that would be possible by logging onto the Console session, but
apparetnly I can't do that!

Are the only two options I have:
1. Convert program to run as a service, so it will start on Boot
or
2. Use something like UltraVNC or RealVNC?

THanks for all the help!

Chester

Hello,
I've been unsuccesful in ever logging on to the Console session of an
SBS box remotely. Am I just missing something here? I've tried using
the -console switch, but it gets me nowhere.

I'd like to be able to Remotely login to an SBS box, but only connect to
the console session (which is already logged in).

Is this possible in SBS?

Thanks!

Chester
