Re: 2 Companies 2 DHCP

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

Gumby,
One building, bad wiring, 4 servers.....2 for each company. Less than 20
users on each domain.

The boss is who is driving the ship on this crazy idea and I'm just supposed
to make it work.

I think they are out of their head but, I at least want to ask if it is
indeed possible to run two different exchange servers and their respective
DHCP servers.

This is not an ideal situation and my people don't know anything about
technology just what they want.

Thanks again,
Erick

one SBS, two AD sites, no problem.

If that SBS is R2 you would do well to implement a 2nd server at the
remote site, and maybe 2nd Exchange which R2 would require a 2nd Exchange
Server license for but no additional CALs. SBS 2003 SP1 does not get
'extended CAL rights'.

20 users at each of 2 sites does not put you into 'I need two AD's'
territory'.

Of these '20 users in each company', how many are shared? (user@com1 and
user@com2)

Appreciate the advice....I already went that route....

They plan on moving to separate buildings in the future so....how would
you answer now.

They want to have a setup where they can pick up and move to the other
building with out too much fuss.

There are less than 20 users in each company they want to keep separate.

I haven't played with the DHCP 'class id' scenario but

1. Dont' use DHCP
is WRONG, _bad_ advice, my main reason for responding to this thread. MS
AD (ie. it's not really an 'SBS' question) integration betwen DHCP/DNS
and AD makes this a bad method of address.

2. Use DHCP reservations
Can work, but it takes management.

moreover, if the total network environment does not exceed SBS
limitations (75 users/devices) then the best way to do this is a single
SBS and user templates based on Company1 vs Company2.

There are several choices with DHCP - short of partitioning the network
itself

1. Dont' use DHCP
2. Use DHCP reservations
3. Use DHCP Class ID'. There is an IPConfig /SetClassID command where
you can put a marker on each machine "Company A" or "Company B" and
then you set the same classes on the servers, so each server only
answers to the machines it is supposed to. This would not work for
Non-Microsoft items like network pritners that use DHCP.

For the boss to keep active email in both companies . I am not sure
what you meant about "same time", but I assumed you meant that he would
be sending mail from both.

The solutions are imperfect. He could use POP3 and have both accounts
in Outlook and send from either account he prefers when he composes
mail.

or,
He could use Outlook Web Access for email, so he would still manage he
mail, calendar, contacts on each Exhange Server but use IE for the
front end. OWA is a very good interface and I use internally because I
use 4 different email addresses regularly.

I have a company that is now dividing and so they want to run separate
SBS for fileserver and email for each company.
Company A = 1 file server standard 2003 install, 1 Email server SBS
2003
Company B = 1 file server standard 2003 install, 1 Email server SBS
2003

I have two problems:
1. CEO wants to look like he is sending and receiving mail from both
exchange servers from one machine at the same time. i.e..
boss@xxxxxxxxxxxx and boss@xxxxxxxxxxxx

2. DHCP is giving me fits about seeing each other as both sets of
servers are in the same building and wiring, but they are different
domains and IP schemas.

HELP!!!!! Please!!!!

Erick
