Re: Is there a difference

Tech-Archive recommends: Speed Up your PC by fixing your registry

Seems like hair splitting Greg. Maybe MS should re-write
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/886210/en-us and re-phrase.

Either way, it's something I care not to do by hand if I don't have to and
symptomatic that something else is wrong/broken or in the case of Vista or
IE7, needs 'adjustment' or updates.

It does not "migrate" the user profiles in the true sense of the word. All
it does is change the ProfileImagePath registry entry to point to the old
profile folder and gives full control permissions to the old profile
folder.

Look under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\ for your login name after you log in as the
new user, then lop off the domain part to point back to the old profile.
Give full control to the new domain user and your are at the same point of
the SBS "migrate" profile method.

Good catch, and that will be a pain point if you join the PC manually.

It migrates the user profiles too as I recall.

This is usually a networking problem. You might want to make sure the
client PC can see the SBS normally, that it's getting it's DHCP info
from the SBS, and particularly that it's pointing only to the SBS for
DNS.

Connectcomputer joins the PC to the domain, plus whatever other
installations and configurations you tell it to do when you run the
wizard (such as installing or configuring Outlook, printers, etc.).
If you join the PC to the domain manually, none of those things will
happen. Other than that, there's no reason not to join the PC to the
domain manually. However, I'd still wonder if the connectcomputer
failure is indicative of another problem that needs to be resolved.

I cant get connectcomputer to work at the moment, but is there any
difference when adding a computer to a domain, say in the computer
properties?

Appreciate your help
