If you go further into Sean's Blog and open the "debunking the top Ten 10 Myths about SBS document" you find
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Krenfroe@xxxxxxxxx Asked: Is there a tutorial on setting up a second exchange server to have redundancy with SBS
Answered: You can use the normal Exchange information for this. Take a look at www.microsoft.com/exchange/library for more information.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
which is what I pointed you to before.

I have Backup Mail server with DNS made easy. This is fine for an Exchange server not to miss mail, what I want is for redundancy at the user level

You can start by reading here http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124972.aspx
If you post a link to Sean's post, I'll contact him and clarify what he was referring to...and ask him for pointers to documentation
But I think all you really want is MX Backup, which is easy and cheap

I want exactly what was stated in the OP.
If the main SBS2003 Sp1 server is down, the Windows Server Standard R2 , which is also a DC & backup DNS, would short to medium term also provide exchange redundancy. This is what I assumes Sean was referring to by " backup exchange server.

You would need a second server license and a full blown Exchange license, neither of which are cheap
If you have SBS 2003 R2 your cals would cover the CALs, if you do not have R2 you would Also need Exchange Cals for the second box
If you are just looking for a way to "hold mail" if SBS goes down...there are many other cheaper options

Sure, SBS is required to be the root domain controller, the primary domain controller, and can't trust any other domains. But you can have file and print servers, line of business application servers and... get this, AND backup domain controllers, backup Exchange Servers, ISA servers on the edge*, secondary SQL servers*.
How do I setup a Windows 2003 R2 member server to be a backup exchange server to a SBS2003 SP1 sever.?
Thanks
