Re: Windows Update - Svchost - error 0x745F2780



Hi Inn,

Sorry for the late response. What I did since the last time was to install
the hotfix on one of the PC that had the problem described in my original
post. This morning, I received a call from the customers saying that the PC
without the hotfix was stuck again. So I guess that the hotfix solves my
issue and I installed it on the second PC as well.

From the description, I understand this issue is that 2 client computers
receive "The instruction at "0x745f2780" referenced memory at
"0x00000000".
The memory could not be 'read' " error information when they rebooted. If
I
am off base, please don't hesitate to let me know.

First, I want to know whether these problematic computers' OS is XP, if
so,

What is more, I would like to provide the general information to trouble
shoot such issue:

Base on my knowledge, it seems not related to WSUS. This issue can be
caused by many factors such as the corrupted system file or the third
party
program interference. Let's take the following steps on the client
computers:

Step one
================
I would like you to install the following hotfix:

FIX: When you run Windows Update to scan for updates that use Windows
Installer, including Office updates, CPU utilization may reach 100 percent
for prolonged periods

Step Two
===============
Let's perform these steps leaving the svchost crash dialog open.

1. Click Start->Run, type "services.msc" (without quotation marks) in the
open box and click OK.
2. Double click the service "Automatic Updates".
3. Click on the Log On tab, please ensure the option "Local System
account"
is selected and the option "Allow service to interact with desktop" is
unchecked.
4. Check if this service has been enabled on the listed Hardware Profile.
If not, please click the Enable button to enable it.
5. Click on the tab "General "; make sure the "Startup Type" is
"Automatic". Then please click the button "Start" under "Service Status"
to
start the service.
6. Repeat the above steps with the other service: Background Intelligent
Transfer Service (BITS)

Step Three
==============
Re-register Windows Update components and Clear the corrupted Windows
Update temp folder

1. Click on Start and then click Run,
2. In the open field type "REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL" (without quotation marks)
and press Enter.
3. When you receive the "DllRegisterServer in WUAPI.DLL succeeded"
message,
click OK.
4. Please repeat these steps for each of the following commands:

REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL
REGSVR32 WUAUENG1.DLL
REGSVR32 ATL.DLL
REGSVR32 WUCLTUI.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL
REGSVR32 WUWEB.DLL

After the above steps are finished. Sicne temporary folder of Windows
Update may be corrupted. We can refer to the following steps to rename
this
folder that

5. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following
command in the opened window.

net stop WuAuServ

Note: You might need to reboot before the net stop command will work

6. Click Start, Run, type: %windir% and press Enter.
7. In the opened folder, rename the folder SoftwareDistribution to SDold.
8. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following
command in the opened window.

net start WuAuServ

9. Please test the issue again.

Step Four
================
If the problem persists, please perform clean boot on client computer and
monitor for a while, to do so:

a. Click Start -> Run
b. Input msconfig and click OK.
c. Click Service Tab and check Hide all Microsoft Services and click
Disable All.
d. Click Startup Tab and click Disable All.
e. Click OK and reboot the computer and test again.

Step Five
================
If this issue still exists, please kindly gather the following information
for my further research:

1. When the error dialog pop-up, please get a screenshot and send to my
working mailbox v-innjin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

2. Please download and run the setup MPS report tool on the SBS 2003
server.

a. Visit
http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/b/1/bb139fcb-4aac-4fe5-a579-30b0bd9
15706/MPSRPT_SETUPPerf.exe to download the file.
b. Run the MPSRPT_SETUPPerf.exe on the server box.
c. Wait for 10~15 minutes.
d. Open Windows explorer, navigate to
%SYSTEMROOT%\MPSReports\Setup\Reports\cab
e. Send the .cab file directly to me at v-innjin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
