How about SQL 2005 Express? Better manageability and less opportunity for
"stomping". Don't know if your customer app will support it or otherwise
meet your needs, but it might.

would be more expensive than upgrade to Premium, you not only need a
server license but CALs.

As the upgrade to Premium SP1 is no longer available (unless you can
find someone with old stock) you'd have to go to Premium R2, then
exercise downgrade rights to get SQL2000. Exercising downgrade rights
means no R2 bits on the box.

What's wrong with MSDE? (sounds easier)

Thanks for the reply, SuperGumby. I've heard the same thing from
others....

My main worry with MSDE is that it's just not easy to manage, and for a
line of business app I'd really want to make sure I could do that
(including scheduled maintenance plans/backup). Also, I always worry that
something is going to stomp on something else; I've seen problems with
that before (Backup Exec). Maybe I'm just being paranoid.

That's an interesting question.
I want to upgrade a customer from SBS2003 to SBS2003 Premium (to use
SQL2000) but it doesn't seem to be available anymore ?

It doesn't show up in the distributors catalogue either.

I don't want to upgrade to Premium - we just want to buy SQL &
install it in Standard. :)

As per subject, I've got a client running SBS2003 Std SP1 (not R2)
and we may want to put SQL on that box. I've never tried this
before & wasn't sure what version I could use...and whether it
would botch anything else currently running in MSDE. Any advice?
It's a very small office (two users) & I'm not too concerned about
resource usage as it's a reasonably hefty server (it's got 2GB
RAM, should be enough?)....this is to run Schwab's Portfolio
Manager. The product can be run in an MSDE instance but I think
that isn't the best route. Ideas welcome!
