Re: NIC Config, conflicts and changes

Your wan ip has to be o the same network as your router. That means if
your router is at 192.168.0.1 mask 255.255.255.0 then your SBS WAN nic
has to be at 192.168.0.x.

What you have in your ipconfig is fine. You do not have to change
anything. You might want to go through the connect to the internet
wizard found in the Srver Management console.

Hi Jim,

That worked great; now for question #2. If my Router is 192.168.1.1 and I
change the Local Area Server to 192.168.16.2 and I leave the WAN at
192.168.0.1 will all this work? As I am not sure what the ranges have to be
for all the IP configurations to be able to communicate...Kevin (sorry if
this is a real basis question).

Hi Jim,

I will start with you reply to Question 1 - I don't have any top, the only
way for me to access the Network Connections is from the Control Panel which
is just a long list of the contents and when I select Network Connections it
just shows list of the New Connection, Local Area Server and then WAN. It is
not a Normal window to open but smilar to access a program file in "All
Programs"... Kevin

Hello,
I setup my SBS2003 Prem a while back and havve been getting DNS error
messages (ID 4004 The DNS server was unable to complete directory service
enumeration of zone...). Thesehave been common I have come to the conclusion
that this may be due to the way that I was advised to configure the NICs. I
want to change them to as per Article 306802 and I have the following
questions that relate to my 2 NIC setup:

1. The article tells me to set the binding order of the; and I should open
Network and Dial-up Connections; then Advanced menu and Advanced Settings...
How to I get here as I can only find my Network connections throught Control
Panel and then my only options are WAN and Server Local Area Connection...
there is no Advanced Menu..

Every server I have touched has words across the top in Network
Connections. One of the words next to Help is Advanced. Does your
Network Connections screen not have words across the top?

2. When I rerun the Internet Conection Wizard and I put in the new IP on the
Local Area Connection will I need to change my Router IP address which is set
at 192.168.1.1?

Local Are Connection is not the WAN connection. You can change things
but they are on two different screens. Personaly I set the WAN
connection manually and then run the internet wizard. You could remove
the wins entry on the external nic. Since netbios is disabled the wins
entry doesn't do anything though.

This is an ipconfig/all from a typical SBS 2 nic install. Hiding the
mac address is silly. The only thing to hide would be the real world
ip if you have one. Your router is using a private ip so no need to
hide that.
