Re: recommended hardware for sbs pre

Hi Eriol:

Nothing an SBS does is processor intensive. You need hard drives and RAM.
I would forgo the second processor and add the extra RAM. I might also get
4 drives and create 2 RAID 1 arrays, one for Windows and programs, one for
data. The 4 drive hot spare would be OK as well, but just three drives in
RAID5 will make you miserable if one drive should fail.

If, on the other hand, your hardware person can be there in hours with a
replacement drive, then three may be OK.

Hi,

we need to install a new server hardware in our law office. We have 15
clients running Win XP. The server runs Windows SBS 2003 standard or
premium edition - depending of the need of an SQL server. Today, we do
not need an SQL server. There might be a need for an SQL server from
2008/2009 on (which is doubtful, but possible ...). My question is: Do
we need a double CPU (2 x Intel Xeon dual core CPUs) to run an SQL
server for our purpose? Or would a single Intel Xeon 3 GHz dual core
CPU be sufficient?

Just for this reason our hardware service provider suggests to install
a server with

2 x Intel Xeon 5130 2,00 GHz dual core CPUs
3 GB RAM
4 x 73 GB HD (3+1)
MS SBS 2003 PRE

I am not sure if this is what we need today. I wonder if this would be
enough

1 x Intel Xeon 5050 3,00 GHz dual core
2 GB RAM
3 x 73 GB HD
MS SBS 2003 SE

And even if we would need to install SQL, this might be enough. Or am
I wrong?

I know, there are some information unclear. But the general question
is: Would an SQL server slow down the server mentioned below too much,
or do we really "need" the double Intel CPUs today, even though we do
not use SQL today?

Thanks for your help!

Eriol
