Hello Customer,
Thank you for posting here.
According to your description, I understand that it will cost you long time
to logon SBS domain via hardware VPN connection. If I have misunderstood
the problem, please don't hesitate to let me know.
First, please let me know that if you do not make VPN client logon domain,
can you access the remote SBS fine? If you still have slow connection while
VPN client do not logon domain, this will be a hardware VPN issue. You can
confirm the setting in the hardware or confirm the VPN connection speed.
If you can fine access the remote SBS while VPN client do not logon domain,
I suggest we try the following steps to see if we can resolve this issue:
1. Before we go any further, I strongly recommend you re-run the CEICW
Wizard. You can strictly follow this KB article to complete the wizard:
825763 How to configure Internet access in Windows Small Business Server
2003
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=825763
2. Please ensure the DNS of VPN client is pointing to SBS IP address.
If the issue persists, please kindly help me collect some information for
further investigation:
1. Please gather outcome of command "ipconfig /all" on SBS and VPN client,
and then send the result to me.
2. Please gather outcome of command "route print" on SBS and VPN client,
and then send the result to me.
3. As you said "It can take 10 minutes or more just to open Word or Excel",
the word or execl files are in local VPN client hard disk or on SBS?
4. Do you install ISA on SBS?
5. Can local internal clients logon SBS domain fine?
Hope these steps will give you some help.
Thanks and have a nice day!
Best regards,
Terence Liu(MSFT)

| I have an SBS 2003R2 network that have some clients that are on
| hardware VPN connections. The VPN connection is not the fastest in
| the world, only about 460K. I have all the DNS configured correctly
| and everything else, but when the client goes to log in it takes
| between 5 and 15 minutes for the client to login to the network.
| After that everything runs VERY slow. It can take 10 minutes or more
| just to open Word or Excel. I checked the processes to see if
| anything is eating up the CPU time or memory and the CPU is like
| 75-98% idle, and the memory is like 50% free. If they disconnect the
| VPN connection so they are logging in with a cached account everything
| works fine and runs great. Any ideas what is causing the issue?
