Re: Transfer domain from 2003 SBS SP1 to 2003 SBS R2

DNS, interesting. I followed the article and once I had to change the old
server back to itself because not much was happening on the network. But I
didn't consider having both pointing to each other. Did'nt seem to be a
problem in this case. But made a note for next time.

Good point. After thinking about it, I just logged back in to suggest making
sure his DNS settings he had both servers each including were complete and
correct. Sometimes the ntds zone and records fail to be created on a
replica domain controller.

It is possible to do the migration by this method. I've done it a couple
of times but not SBS to SBS. I was integrating an SBS server into an
existing domain. The article isn't very clear and many situations may crop
up that are not in the article. I was never happy with the migrations I
did. If I ever do it again I will try the "swing" method others have
posted about.

I don't know if it's in the article but one thing I found helpful was to
have DNS running on both servers and have the TCP/IP DNS settings on both
server's NICs pointing to both DNS servers while transferring the FSMO
roles. I don't know what difference this makes but in one case I couldn't
transfer some of the roles until I made this change. I'm assuming the DNS
replication wasn't working yet or out of sync.

Ok, but it then says -

This article does not intend to provide a migration solution. However, if
you use the steps in this article to join an existing domain that already
contains an SBS 2003 computer or an SBS 2000 computer, you will have to
demote the existing SBS server by manually running Dcpromo.exe to remove
the
computer from the domain. This retirement process must occur within 14
days
of adding the new SBS 2003 computer to the domain or the new SBS 2003
computer may display warnings and shut down periodically.

Confussing, or not explained well. What is the correct method?

Sorry some of the copy/paste didn't come through.

The very first paragraph in that kb article states "You should not use
this
article to add an SBS 2003 computer to a network where there is an
existing
SBS 2000 or SBS 2003 domain controller for migration purposes."

Answered in your other thread.

You should not use this article to add an SBS 2003 computer to a
network
where there is an existing SBS 2000 or SBS 2003 domain controller for
migration purposes.

Well, I did some searching on newsgroups and found this article
884453.
Sounds like the right article but I could be wrong. I'm trying to
transfer
the existing domain etc from a 2003 SBS SP1 server to a new 2003 SBS
R2
server. Then retire the old 2003 SBS SP1 server.

So I decided to pursue this Microsoft method and of course I've hit a
problem. Everything seemed to go up until the bit it asks me to
continue
the
SBS setup (step 13). It performs a check first and and I get -

'Windows Small Business Server 2003 cannot be installed on a domain
controller that is not the assigned the operations master roles.'

And won't continue. Don't understand, I followed the instructions to
the
letter. Now the old SBS server won't see the new SBS server.
Although
the
new server will see the old server.

Your help is appreciated!
