Hi Eriq,

You were dead right about the firewall, I can now ping the new server.
However setup still won't continue. I'm I working on the right article
(884453) for transferring the domain to a new server and retiring the old
server?

Thanks

Well, I did some searching on newsgroups and found this article 884453.
Sounds like the right article but I could be wrong. I'm trying to transfer
the existing domain etc from a 2003 SBS SP1 server to a new 2003 SBS R2
server. Then retire the old 2003 SBS SP1 server.

So I decided to pursue this Microsoft method and of course I've hit a
problem. Everything seemed to go up until the bit it asks me to continue the
SBS setup (step 13). It performs a check first and and I get -

'Windows Small Business Server 2003 cannot be installed on a domain
controller that is not the assigned the operations master roles.'

And won't continue. Don't understand, I followed the instructions to the
letter. Now the old SBS server won't see the new SBS server. Although the
new server will see the old server.

Your help is appreciated!

Brandan -

I've hit similar situations, and have a suggestion for where the problem
may be. If step 13 will not continue, then the FSMO roles have not
successfully transferred. Check the firewall settings for the NIC on the
box that will be the new SBS server. I'll wager that the firewall is
enabled, and if the old server won't see the new server, the domain
transfer steps cannot be completed.

So, check the properties of the NIC and look at the Firewall tab (not
the Windows Firewall in the Control Panel). Windows 2003 SP1 and Windows
2003 R2 core installs enable the firewall by default on the NIC to keep
worms and other nasties off the box while it's relatively unprotected,
and you have to turn this off to get full two-way communication between
the two boxes.

once you can ping the new server from the old server, the domain
transfer pieces should complete successfully.

HTH...
