Re: The Chkdsk.exe utility incorrectly identifies and resets security descriptors

Jim thanks for two good ideas.
In the "catch 22" of SBS world I am of course running Raid 1 hardware based
on Dells CERC ATA 100 controller. Your post implies BartPE will not work in
that environment. Is that correct?
Doing a Parallel install of Server 2003? I do have an unused replacement
drive for this box. My existing server boots and loads it just does not
automatically start most of the services and will not allow a manual start
of services.
What would be the procedure to parallel install? Is there any info such as
article or KB that describes the process?
Do I break the mirror, replace one drive with the new drive and run an
install on the new drive?
Will the old drive then be visible to the new operating system as just a
drive and not try to boot from it etc.or cause other problems? Do I have to
do anything to the old drive to indicate its no longer the boot drive?
Thank you again.

If the server is not running raid I would boot off a BartPE disk, copy
files to a hard drive and move on. Susan's suggesting of calling Microsoft
may help. You might be able to do a parallel install of Server 2003 to
another hard drive (one you bought just for this missadventure) on that
server. Try to reach the data after adding the raid driver to the recovery
install.

We need to restore or partially restore this server enough to get a
weekend of work that was not backed up. SBS 2003 Dell OEM on a Dell
400SC server box approaching hard drive capacity. Operator ran a Chkdsk
/f in response to a system message which suggested this be done. 50,000
files streamed across the screen "....incorrect security descriptors
replaced with default value." (Operator almost stroked out watching this
endless stream of messages.)
I have tried to search the KBs and newsgroups for a solution. KB913034 ,
831375,83174seems to accurately describe the problem and directs you to
contact MS for a hot. The MS page says if its OEM contact your vendor.
I cannot seem to find an entry point to get software support for SBS from
Dell. Can anyone point me in the right direction (specific website or
phone number) to get this SBS hotfix from Dell. Can I get it directly
from MS?
The KB or one of the links says this hotfix will not address the already
corrupted Ids. So
I would like to get the server running enough to do a last final backup
of data files. Does anyone have a suggested course of action and a good Q
or KB, or article that describes how to start resetting the security
IDs enough to get access to data files?
1. Possibly restore just operating system and not any data files last
good OS backup probably 1/1/07. Most data backed up around 24 to 48 hours
before crash.
2. Server will boot but only a few services will run and those not
running cannot be started manually. You can list directory contents but
you cannot move or copy files. running: are DCOM server, Event log,
several MSQL's, NT LM Security, SB Core Server
3. One commenter suggested it might be possible to copy the security
IDs from a "good" working copy of SBS transferring only the security IDs.
Xcopy with certain parameters.
We started to do Jeff 's swingit migration but could not seem to get
it to complete. We have the intermediate server setup on a separate box
in VM. Could this be the source for a fast resetting to "good" settings.
We are going to: format the new server and do a Clean install of a non
OEM SBS on a brand new Dell SC420 box and just reconnect the 10
workstations to a new Domain.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. I consider my knowledge
level in this area as slightly more than basic.
Thanks for any help you can give me.
