VMWare Workstation (and I assume Server) supports SCSI tape drives as a "generic SCSI device". Works just fine, I've used it.

Neither VPC2004/2007(beta) or VirtualServer 2005/SP1/SP2(when RTM) Virtual
Machines (Guests) will work directly with the Virtual Host tape drive. Same
with any USB devices.
I think VMWARE is the same, but not 100% certain on that for USB devices,
but quite sure about SCSI/IDE Tape drives.

Thats too bad. Seems like a good way to test a restore when you don't
have a test server.
