Kathy,
Since you seem to be knowledgeable about NTFS security for Word documents,
what would be a way to give users access to change and update Word Documents,
but not delete them?
Do we have to use some third party solution for this?
Thanks

With NTFS permissions, if you can't delete, you can't edit Word documents.
properly - you'll end up with a share full of temp files very quickly. You
may have creator owner with full control , so a user would be able to delete
any document he created - if these have been moved from another folder on
the same drive they will still have their old permissions. Also check
permissions for authenticated users and everyone and FOLDER permissions - I
don't know if FDC has persisted into 2003 but I remember that in NT and
2000, if a user had full control on a folder (as opposed to selecting all
the allow boxes, which looks the same but isn't), even if the file
permissions were restricted she could still delete all files. See

A common cause of "deleting" files in one office was trying to open them
through the save as dialog box (???), BTW.
Also remember that you may need to log off and on again to "refresh
permissions"

Hi All,a
Basic Question, We have installed SBS2k3 and created a share called Data.
Within this share we have various folders. We noticed that some users were
accidentally deleting files, so we put restrictions on the files. We then
discovered that although they could not open the files, they could still
delete them. We checked the settings and even put a deny on a test file,
they could still delete the file. We removed inherited permissions and put
deny on the file for a user.....they couldn't access the file but could
still delete. They option for delete under advanced options had a deny in
place for this user, yet still they could delete!!
How do I stop this, I can set access rights without any problems but can't
seem to stop them deleting......
TIA
Martina
