Re: Domain controller not found over VPN

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Hi Joe,

Well have tried an entry in LMHosts.sam but at the moment that still doesn't
seem to be helping the machine find the Domain Controller.

it sounds like WINS issues. If you do
an ipconfig /all on the client while connected, does the PPP entry show
the SBS as WINS server?

There is no PPP entry. Could that be because this is a hardware VPN not a
software one. Sound interesting thought how can I check that WINS is
working properly.

We have a laptop connecting over a hardware VPN to the SBS server.
Problem is that it has trouble finding the Domain Controller when the DNS
Server addres is set to automatic.

If the Primary DNS Server on the laptop is set to the IP address of the
main Server all works well. Problem is that laptop then has problems if
used elsewhere, which is why the DNS Servers need to be set
automatically.

I already have two entries in the 'Hosts' file as below but what else can
I put in there to help XP resolve the domain controller? Is ther
anything I could put in the 'Networks' file to help resolve the domain
controller?

Hosts:
ServerName (ADDServer) ServerIPAddress
FQDN (ADDServer.AssociatedData.local) ServerIPAddress

Is it really a matter of IP address resolution? When you can't resolve
the DC, can you ping the server by name? If so, it isn't DNS, and a
hosts entry should fix that anyway. If the server can be found by name,
but the DC cannot be identified, it sounds like WINS issues. If you do
an ipconfig /all on the client while connected, does the PPP entry show
the SBS as WINS server?

If not, you might try an entry in the lmhosts file.
