http://www.firestreamer.com allows NTBackup to write DVDs and provides easy
scheduling.

I took over this server so it is a possibilty that packet writing software
was installed, because it was working (although I had never gotten it to
work
before). However I am not aware of any and will have to go back and look.
I
wasn't sure how it was working and it would only write to DVDRW not DVDR.
I
already discussed your 2 step solution with the admin earlier today.
I approached the client about upgrading the 'backup solution' when I took
over the account. Maybe it's time to try again. I am not a big fan of
ntbackup.
thanks for the info

Perry@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx says...
I have a SBS 2003 SP1 that is locking up during an NTBACKUP. This is
not the
backup configured through the wizard. There is a separate ntbackup
running
each night writing to DVD. The media type was chagned 4 days ago and 2
of
the 4 days, 2 minutes into the backup everything freezes. No Event
records
are written, nothing. The last event record will show the backup
starting
and then there is not another record until the server is physically
power-cycled. On the 2 days the backup did run, the same new media
type was
used (Maxell).
It could be a media or drive issue. But NTBackup does not natively
support writing to CD or DVD. Have you installed "packet writing
software" or similar to make the DVD look like a diskette? If so, I can
tell you from personal experience that I have never found any such
software to be 100% reliable. And the most common problem I had with it
was system lockups.
If you want to take backups to DVD, you might want to consider a two-
step approach:
1. NTBackup to a regular hard drive (internal or external).
2. Use a CD/DVD burning program - either native Windows or a product
like Nero - to burn the .bkf file created in #1 to DVD.
