Your solution is indeed a valid one. If your curious, I just found
the cause for the unexplained port redirection. It turned out to be
caused by the shrptflt.dll ISAPI filter. The port redirect was
actually hard-coded into the filter. I 'corrected' this by using a
hex-editor to change byte 0x5B3 to 0x33 in shrpflt.dll (located in
\inetpub\sbsflt) , forcing the redirect to use the standard SSL port
of 443.
So, hopefully this information will save others several hours of
head-scratching trying to track down this unexpected bahaviour.
Disclaimer - modifying system files is done at your own risk! Don't
attempt the above mentioned 'fix' unless you are sure you know what
you're doing.
OK, then it is hardcoded and not something that is easily fixed. Upgrading
could cause problems...
