Our regional non-profit uses POP3/SMTP for mail retrieval from National headquarters. There is a need for Exchange collaborative features within the regional office. Given that I can't change the e-mail accounts (National controls the SMTP domain namespace and I can't alter the Exchange configuration at National I thought I would install Exchange (SBS) in the regional office then use the POP3 Connector to retrieve e-mail from National; then use a SMTP Connector to forward e-mail generated in the regional office back to National if it is not resolved locally.
My question: is there a better way to do this? Are there better tools in the box?
I tried this configuration once; about the fifth computer - there are about 20 e-mail accounts - it went sideways. The POP3 Connector retrieved e-mail but stopped delivering to local accounts; The SMTP Connector would not process e-mail until I deleted it then recreated it. I don't know what happened but for now I'll assume it was something I did. Anyway, that is why I was looking for some validation for this configuration.
The missing link here is a good POP3 downloader. Google this group for
recommendations, and don't expect much from the built-in POP3 connector.
Otherwise it should all work, and I don't think there's a practical
alternative.
