unless there are specific indications in the logs indicating VMWare to be
the cause the MS response to this is pure buck passing. I wonder what the
response would be if the virtualisation system was Virtual Server?

What sort of harware on the host? Is it stressed to perform this duty or
handling it easily? Are you running other VM's? It may be an idea to shut
down any other VM's to see if the problem goes away.

I haven't asked for guarantees, just an idea on what has changed to
