Just priced it out and found that it pays to upgrade to R2 and then purchase
the R2 transition pack. MS charges $3800 for the non-R2 Premium transition
pack. The Premium R2 pack plus the R2 version upgrade is $2900 + $650 =
$3550.
I also learned that SBS 2003 CALs are transferrable to R2 CALs...but you
still have to purchase the R2 Transition Pack CALs and SQL CALs.

for anything before R2. As shown in Allan's post, you can still purchase it
through the channel if it's available. I checked and CDW carries it. Not
sure how long it will remain in the channel.
The MS rep instructed me to upgrade to R2 first and then purchase the R2
Transition Pack (this step adds $699 to the total cost).
I have one remaining question. If I buy the old transition pack through the
channel, it still comes with 5 Transition CALs. I still need to convert 25
more SBS CALs. I don't see where they are selling 5, 10, 20 packs of
Transition CALs. Does anyone know if the R2 Transition CALs will work with
the old Transition Pack?

This happens everytime MS releases a new version - they just abandon the old
versions. I suspect you need the old one, but phone MS or read therelease
notes for the R2 version to be sure. If looking for the old one the key is
the SKU - make sure it is the old one. The old SKU's were (after some
googling):
Standard version: T74-01131 (non-SP1??)
Premium Version: T75-00752 (with SP1)
Watch the SP1 level - you don't want to go backwards as it may cause issues.
Note you also need to upgrade your CAL's - I don't think those SKU's
changed.
As this is a retail item so you may find it as old stock, ie:

(just an example - I don't know anything about superwarehouse)

Hello,
I'm looking into the option of using a transition pack for the SBS 2003
SP1. Do I simply purchase the SBS 2003 R2 pack? Or can I only use it on
an SBS 2003 R2?
Thankyou
Jonathan
