RE: Slow SBS network, Delayed write failure, "Path too deep"

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Hello Customer,

Thank you for posting here.

According to your description, I understand that your Internet access is
very slow, and when you access share folder, you get error "delayed write
failure" or "Path too deep". If I have misunderstood the problem, please
don't hesitate to let me know.

It is mostly like a hardware issue, I suggest you to connect your hardware
(NIC and switch and route) vendor to check the hardware first.

Based on my research, I suggest we try the following steps to see if we can
resolve this issue:

Step 1:
You have to rerun the CEICW to make sure your SBS 2003 server have right
network configuration. Go through the follow KB and Rerun CEICW again
carefully.

How to configure Internet access in Windows Small Business Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/825763/en-us

Step 2:
1. Upgrade NIC drivers on the target device and hard coded speed/duplex
settings both on the switch and both side NICs.

2. Please try to manually configuring speed and duplex settings on all NICs
and switches and routes to a same 100 full-duplex.

Step 3:
Browse to:

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanWorkstation\Parameters\SessTime
out

And verify the value is set to a decimal value of 300.

If the key does not exist, it can be created:
1. Browse to:

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanWorkstation\Parameters

2. When Parameters is highlighted in the right hand pane right click on the
right hand pane and select new dword.

3. Name the dword SessTimeout (it is case sensivite)

4. When the dword is created, right click it and modify and set the value
to 300

Note: making sure the decimal option is selected.

Step 4:
Please install latest version of antivirus software on all machines and do
a full scan.

If the issue persists, I suggest that we go into a clean boot mode on both
client and SBS with the 3rd party services disabled to narrow down the
issue.

To clean boot the problematic computer, please use the steps below:
a. Click Start, click Run, and then in the Open box, type "MSCONFIG"
(without the quotation marks). Click OK.

b. In the System Configuration Utility (MSConfig) window, click to select
the Selective Startup button.

c. Click to clear the check mark from the "Load startup items" below
Selective Startup.

d. Click the Services tab, click to check the "Hide All Microsoft Services"
box, and remove all the check marks from the remained Non-Microsoft
Services. Please note that the Exchange services could be marked as
non-Microsoft. Please do not disable those services.

e. Click OK to close the MSConfig window. Click Yes when you are asked to
restart your computer in order to enable the changes.

f. After restarting, please check whether this issue will reoccur.

If the issue persists, please kindly help me collect some information for
further investigation:

1. Do all client have same problem?

2. Try to access Internet from SBS, is it slow?

3. Try to access share folder from client to client, do you get error?

4. Try to run command nslookup www.microsoft.com on client, does it can
resolve IP address quickly?

Hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Best regards,

Terence Liu(MSFT)

| I am have a Godawful time at a simple SBS 2003 install -SBS 2003 SP1 (no

|
| From the clients (both) perspective the network is horribly slow
including
| Internet access. The server access is very good. Copies to server file

|
| The server has Intel MB, 2 - 1GB NIC's and is connected to the Internet

|
| - DNS points only to SBS internal Interface on all clients and the server
| - All SP's are current
| - I have attempted to set all NIC's at 100 full-duplex with no change
