Exchange will not send messages with attachments

I have been running exchange for some years with no problems but have
recently noticed more and more delayed/failed messages.

Lately it has got to so bad I have spent a couple of days trying to
solve it and the problem "appears" to be that any emails sent with
attachments fail to send but plai email go through fine.

I have tried sending using DNS and both my ISPs smarthost and the
emailsystems smart host. Same errors across the board.

Typically seems to result in a "The connection was dropped by the
remote host" but often doesn't give any event log errors even with
maximum logging turned on? Just sits in the queue ubtil time is up
then generates an NDR.

Spent ages on Google but no improvements, even removed Symantec AV as
other people seemed to think that caused a problem but no
improvements.

Any help appreciated.
