Thanks - I setup a subdomain as I only get an option to edit an A record for
mydomain.com and not mail.mydomain.com. It could be because I have only
just registered the domain I am currently testing it on. I have emailed
1and1 who currently hold the DNS records.

you don't want a subdomain, you want a HOST or 'A' record for the server

Thanks for your reply - this is my first time setting up SMTP & I want to
be sure I don't do anything that affects the users website as it is
critical to their business.
I have logged into the control panel for the DNS of one of my domains. I
have created a subdomain mail.mydomain.com and have changed the IP
Address (A-Record) to point to the external WAN IP address of the SBS. I
have left the mx record for the subdomain as the default - do I need to
change this?
After doing the above I then created an mx record against mydomain.com
which points to mail.mydomain.com with a priority of 10. I am now
waiting for the DNS entries to update. Is this correct?

for each domain you will need a MX record and an A record
The A record can be whatever you like smtp.domain.com or
mail.domain.com
or remote.domain.com or whatever and would point to the public ip
address
of your SBS server
Then create a MX record for each domain with a priority of 0 to point to
A
record addres, i.e. smtp.domain.com (or whatever you created it as)
You should also have reverse lookup records for the smtp.domain.com or
you'll have problems sending to some domains.
The DNS records must be created on the DNS Servers that handle each of
these domains....NOT on your SBS server
If you don't have access to the DNS control panel for each domain,
contact
their tech support

Can someone point me in the direction of a good SMTP & DNS guide for
multiple domains? My current plan is to :
1. Open Port 25 on the router
2. Run the CEICW - Select SMTP
3. In exchange/recipients/recipient policies add each domain to email
address policies
I'm not sure how I setup the mx records on the multiple domains. At
the
moment the domains are registered with one provider and hosted with
another. Do I need to create subdomains for each e.g. smtp.mydomain.com
and setup an MX record which points to my sbs IP address?
Are there any steps I've missed?
