Am I missing something here or are you a bit confused about POP3 (Post
Office Protocol version 3 (port 110)), SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer
Protocol (port 25)), the diffrence between the two and what they're
used for? They are used for completely different things.
POP3 is a protocol used to retrieve mail from your ISP's mail server /*
Incoming Email */. Your MUA (Mail User Agent) (probably Outlook or
Outlook Express for Windows folk) connects to the mail server on port
110 and 'retr'ieves the mail from the server. A better alternative to
POP3 is IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol).
SMTP on the other hand is a protocol used to send mail /* Outgoing
Email */. It operates on port 25.
POP is incoming - SMTP is outgoing.
You should read 'RFC 1939' and 'RFC 821'. They explain in painfully
enjoyable detail the two protocols respecitvely.
Cheers,
Steve
I'm sure Lanwench will answer as well. Get off of POP and switch to full
SMTP which is what Exchange is designed to use best.

We are using SBS 2003 in our organiation. The mail is received by an
exchange POP3 connector.
So far all our accounts were keept by our internet provider.
Unfortunately recently our IP decided that the mail can be sent only as
"authorized".
As exchange enables to use only one authorization therefore it is now not
possible to have separate accounts for each e-mail user.
So we were forced to use a "catch all function" and load all our mails
from one account. This mean all mail whioch has a domain "@derco.pl" is
going now via POP3 connector.
From this change we started to receive a lot of spam. There are also other
problems.
We are looking for a way to enable Exchange to make multiple user
authorization.
I have heard that there is some Exchange connector enabling such a
function. Does anybody know what it is?
