Re: VPN Works, OWA and RWW Don't

Merv,

I'm experiencing a very semilar issue, can you shed some light on my cituation

I'm experiencing an issue configuring rww to allow a few sales guys to
access their desktops while they are on the road.
I can connect to the desktops from within the office with no problem, when I
try to connect from outside I get error message stating : '"The client could
not connect ot the remote computer. Remote connections might not be enabled
or the computer might be to busy to accept connections.".
I can't connect with the administrator account nor the user accounts which
has the right permission.

I have a few questions.
1. where can I find some document online on how to configure rww to work.
2. I have a Firefox firewall I opened filter port 443, 4125, is that all?
3. Is it manadatory to have an ISA server configured?
4. could having one nic card on the server cause the busy server error?
5. on the firewall how can I make sure the port that's opened is tied to ip
of the server (telnet)?
6. does the internal desktops needs static ip's?

I have been working on this project for a couple of weeks, and getting to
the deadline where the sales team needs remote access, if I can't get this to
work I am looking a licensed web access like gotomypc or something.
Any form of guidance would be greatly appriciated for this issue.

Hello Merv

Excellent - Thank You, that was it.

I have been struggling with this for a couple of weeks now. This was a
hangup from when my ISP first assigned a block of static IP addresses and
said one was for the router and one for the server. My old setup had been
like that and I hadn't looked closely enough at the network setup diagram
you
linked too.

There's the benefit of an expert looking over your shoulder!

Thanks again.

Ashley

Hi Ashley,

(Static IP, 2 NICs, router) Network setup diagram

Refer to the diagram and physically set up your network to match it
(don't
worry about the text or the fact that it talks about ISA if you don't
have
SBS 2003 Premium). It looks like you've given your "external NIC" a
public
IP address. What you want to do is given the WAN (public) side of the
rotuer the static IP address assigned by your ISP. Then give the
external
NIC an IP in the same subnet (IP range) as the LAN side of the router and
a
default gateway of the router itself. Then, in the router, forward all
relevant ports (4125 for RWW, 443 for SSL, etc.) to the IP address of the
external NIC.

Then re-run CEICW, enter your ISP's DNS nameservers' IP addresses as
"forwarders", enable the firewall, allow the appropriate services, create
your Web Certificate with your FQDN (mydomain.com), complete the email
section and finish CEICW.

Hello All

Clients can connect to OWA and RWW internally, but not externally
using
https://owa.domain.com/exchange. If they use VPN connection
"Shortcut
to
connect to Small Business Server" they can then use OWA or RWW
inside
domain
using http://server/exchange.

Additonally when I try to run CEICW to try and fix this is comes up
with
the
error message "an error occurred while configuring a component" and
when I
check the log, it says no firewall rules could be found.

Currently patched and up to date, except ISA 2004 SP2.

My setup is 2 NICs, external router. One further thing, since I
configured
router to connect to interent, I can no longer access web
configuration
page
of router from server, I have to connect a separate PC directly to
the
router.

Any pointers?

TIA

Ashley
