And there you put your finger on the problem...
...which is that BT is a domestic player. They've provided telephones
since they were invented, and haven't yet got up to speed with this
'Internet' thing.
A client of mine has a BT business account, with a static IP address.
However, they do not lease a domain from BT and the reverse DNS
entry is a generic one (12.34.56.78@xxxxxxxxxxx or similar) and this
puts them on various email blacklists. No smarthost on offer, either.
Business clients are expected to use Yahoo for email, with whom BT
has some sort of connection. That's how professional they are.
I also have a client with a BT business account and 2 domains registered through BT. I can manage the DNS for these domains through a web interface available after logging in at www.btbroadbandoffice.com.
They also provide a smarthost at mail.btconnect.com which can be used without authentication as long as the sender's domain has been registered with BT. (By 'registered' I mean you've asked BT to permit you to use the domain for mail on their servers, not necessarily registered the domain name through BT).
I am certainly not a fan of BT; however, I have found support for their business class products to be half decent, although I think their whole ISP infrastructure is somewhat unreliable (DNS servers not working for example).
Although not the cheapest UK ISP, I always use Zen for new ASDL accounts (5 useable static IPs for no extra cost even on 'Home' accounts) because they are very reliable, they're not too big to not care, and their support is good.
