Re: Two SBS 2003 Servers in Single Domain

Actually it's a misstatement but thanks for pointing that out.

A better way put it is that you can't *run* SBS where another server
holds the Active Directory FSMO roles, at least not permanently.

This too is a misunderstanding.

Additional W2K3 Std

This is a myth. Windows 2003 Standard Ed. member servers can be
promoted to domain controllers on the SBS domain. What you can't to is
the inverse, joining SBS to a 2003 Std. domain, since as you mention
SBS demands the FSMO roles.

this be done? Ideally it would be a DC also for AD redundancy but if
this is not possible I will have to live with that.

Nope... If you want to replicate the Active Directory it's possible to
use you Standard Ed. server as a DC, which (assuming DNS is properly
configured) allows you to maintain some redundancy.

I've used a setup like this in my office for the last six months, but
in retrospect it's not even worth the effort. Here is what I've
observed: when SBS is down for a reboot the Standard Ed. server sits
there, as a second Global Catalog (GC) server, waiting for me to
possibly edit the Active Directory, via ADUC, GPMC, or what have you.
If I change the Active Directory, it accepts those changes and holds
them until SBS is online again and available for replication. It's
almost moot to have Global Catalog redundancy in a small network
because when SBS is down, I'm not concerned about changing the Active
Directory. I'm worried about SBS being down.
