Happy to help. Your question brings back memories of trying to figure all
this out back in 1998 when we migrated from peer-to-peer to SBS 4.0.

Wow, Thanks for taking the time...
It seems to be working. I simply set the reply to on everybody's exchange
tab to the proper domain. I will set up the pop3 connector in the morning
and see how it goes.
I was thinking I would make myself the guinea pig and try it on mine
first... It's funny you mentioned that. No joke about them getting vexed
about email. You could set their pants on fire and get less complaints
then if their email goes down. I have noticed that you have about half a
moment once they get the outlook error box before they are hunting you
down in packs (complete with torches. Speaking of which, where do they get
them so fast?)...
OK, I will do it now. I figure I have inconvenienced them all so much
already, what's a bit more going to hurt. Now, if I could just get them to
untie me...
Talk to you soon! Thanks for all the help.

The easiest fix for this is to re-run the CEICW. On the page called
"E-mail Domain Name," change the entry from yourdomain.local to the
correct domain. That would be everything after the @ in your actual
e-mail address. You'll also need to enter the appropriate information
for POP3 on the pages called "E-mail Retrieval Method" and "POP3 Mailbox
Accounts." You can see an example at
http://www.sbs-rocks.com/sbs2k3/sbs2k3-n2.htm (thanks to MVP Andy Goodman
for the great how-to, especially the screen shots).
I recommend leaving the existing POP settings in the users' Outlook
profiles but changing so it doesn't check the POP accounts automatically.
Once you're sure Exchange is doing the pickups as you wish, you can then
remove the POP settings from the Outlook profiles.
Here's another idea regarding the pitchfork comment. When you re-run the
CEICW, make all the appropriate settings, but add only your own mailbox
in the connector properties. That way, everyone else will continue to
pick up mail as they do now, but you'll have switched yourself over to
Exchange. If it works, you can switch other users in groups or
individually as time allows. You'd just add them to the POP connector,
which you access from the console Advanced Management section. Just
remember that once they go on the connector, you won't want to let
Outlook continue to check the same mailbox directly - this seems like it
could cause issues.
Lastly, when you're satisfied that everything is working OK, check the
mail profiles to make sure the default message delivery location is the
server mailbox rather than a PST. If it's a PST, you'll need to switch
the default to the mailbox, copy the items from the PST to the mailbox,
and close or delete the PST. Post back if you have questions.
BTW, my last comment: users get funny when their mail doesn't work, so
I'm always careful to test everything when I'm finished. You can get
away with their mail acting weird during the cutover if you give them
notice, but once you're finished they'll expect it to work at least as
well as it does now. (I use my personal account for testing, from their
webmail interface).

Fair enough. I will consider implementing it in this fashion. If I can
get it configured properly without users gathering outside my office
with pitchforks and torches, I'll do it now... Will you give me a couple
pointers
Currently when I send email from it, it bounces with the error message
saying:
There was a SMTP communication problem with the recipient's email
server. Please contact your system administrator.
<sbs-server.SBAOR.local #5.5.0 smtp;550 REQUESTED ACTION NOT TAKEN: DNS
FAILURE>
I have since set the reply addresses to point to the external pop addys.
I do not know if it is working now or not... Apparently email is getting
rejected due to the improper .local top level domain.

Here's the fix
http://seanda.blogspot.com/2004/10/having-trouble-trusting-exchange-from.html.
IMO you would be way ahead using Exchange. Just use the SBS POP
Connector to retrieve the messages from the POP mailboxes if you can't
go to full SMTP e-mail. You can have mydomain.local as your internal
domain name, while using mydomain.com or any other address for e-mail -
the two are unrelated.
Why? Centralized, mostly automated configuration and deployment.
Centralized virus scanning of incoming messages, instead of relying on
a local virus app on the client PC that may or may not be configured
and operating properly. Mailbox backup included in routine server
backups, as opposed to (usually) no backup whatsoever for locally
stored PST files. One connection to pick up messages, instead of one
connection per mail profile. Better monitoring of e-mail operations -
Exchange will log errors like crazy if something is wrong, whereas you
may not even notice that a direct Outlook connection is failing.
IMO Exchange Server is the #1 reason for a small business to have a
server.

Good Morning! (afternoon or evening, as the case may be)
I have a new SBS domain. I am using outside services for web hosting
and email...
I do not want exchange to send email as I have set up my domain to be
mydomain.local.
When I configure Outlook I set the pop 3 account to be default.
However, if I reboot then Exchange takes over and sets to default.
My understanding is that I need exchange for the company web and
shared calendars,
however, I do not want to use it for email.
When Exchange is default then outgoing email is lost in never never
land... I do not want to force my users to select which account they
are going to send from every time they send a message...
I have had a few bounces that say;
<SomeUser@xxxxxxxxxxx>:
Sorry, I couldn't find any host named XXXXX.local. (#5.1.2)
