Re: Accessing SBS 2003 Shares with XP Home

One of our users just bought a new pc to replace an existing one that failed
and off course they bought off the shelf with XP Home.

The previous pc that was connecting and sharing to SBS had home on it. But
now I cannot for the life of me get this XP Home connected. Unfortunately the
workgroup name field isn't long enough for me to enter the domain name e.g.
mylongdomain.local

Any other suggestions would be appreciated. I have other XP home sers
connected and working using a COM+ application, I couldn't care less about
other domain issues, I just need to get this user back up using the
distributed application.

Thanks for any assistance!

I have setup a few xp home clients this way but I have put a new server
in and installed the same as always but CAN NOT connect to even a share
from XP home. It brings up user name and password box and then just
comes back to it everytime I put in correct user name adn password. I
can see in server in network neighborhood. Just can see any of the
shares. I have tried user password and admin password. I can't figure
out what I did differently then the last 3 servers I installed on other
networks. It just worked.

I know XP home can NOT join a domain but I have always gotten it to
access shares very easily.

Thanks

From an XP Home PC, I can access shares on a SBS 2003 server by "connecting
using a different user name" and using the corresponding username/password
of the Admin account that was assigned to that share. Note that this Admin
account is the same Admin account that was originally set up upon first
installing SBS 2003.

However, if I set up a regular User account or even a new Admin account on
the server and make corresponding shares, I cannot access any of these
shares from XP Home using the same method as previously described.

As a side note, I don't have any issues connecting to shares with any of
these accounts when logged in through an XP Home VPN.

1. How can I connect to SBS 2003 user shares from XP Home with a regular
User account? Are there any configuration changes that can be made to
policies, group settings, user settings, etc.?

2. Why can I connect to the "original Admin" shares and not to any "new
Admin" shares from XP Home? What is the difference in this scenario?

3. Does SBS 2003 have a "simple file sharing" option similar to that found
in XP Pro?

4. What effect would changing the WORKGROUP name of the XP Home PC to match
the DOMAIN name of the server? I read somewhere that this may help some
issues, but it was unclear as to what it might help.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
