Re: Using connectcomputer, migrating profile

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

I assumed that it was a server command of some sort. Thanks.

a simple google of "profwiz" gets www.forensit.com/Profwiz/index.htm .

i really don't see why people prefer the hassle of other methods. this tool
does the job.

I installed a sbs box this weekend and had never used this "wizard" before,
but chose to during this install. I can say I was very impressed how
cleanly
and quickly this happened.

I have a related question. I know this is the SBS forum, but is there
anything similiar to that with just a server 2003 standard install. I
also
just discovered USMT 3.0 with scanstate and loadstate commands. It still
takes time and another location to save the *.mig file to and time to
restore
it. Also it takes a little practive to build the confidence to trust it
since I can see the number of files or size.

Where does one find profwiz that was mentioned before?

Merv,

I am going to try what you suggest, that may be just the ticket. THanks!

Again, we're assuming you're working with Win2K Pro and WinXP Pro
workstations...

On the workstation that you've already joined to the SBS 2003 domain,
when
you look in the path: C:\Documents and Settings, do you see any of the
"old
domain" profiles?

If so, you may be able to copy these to local profiles, delete any
"new" SBS
2003 domain profiles that were created previously; then unjoin the
workstation from the SBS 2003 domain, reboot and then run
ConnectComputer
again to associate the new local profile(s) with the domain user(s) on
that
workstation. (Never had to do this this, so I can't say for sure
whether it
will work).

I followed the link and am going to try this when I am back on site.
The
window that pops up during connectcomputer is familiar although the
bottom
portion doesn't fill because the workstation is already a member of
the
domain. THe article says that you can't use this option to migrate
the
profile if you area already on the domain.

THis option will run well for the new stations I need to add, so
thanks
alot
for sharing. If there are other options I would appreciate more
advice.

Thanks!

When I use connectcomputer to join a computer to the domain I end up
with
a
whole new profile. What is the best way to keep my current
settings? Do
I
run the File and Setting Transfer Wizard to back them up and then
restore
them once I join the domain? I have two cases here.

1. Adding server to a peer to peer network, systems have never been
on a
domain.

2. Joining computers to a domain where the systems had been logging
in
to a
Windows NT server on the domain, now the computers are being joined
and
will
login to a new SBS2003 server. Also the same network had some new
workstations that will replace existing ones, the profiles will need
to
move
over to the new machines and login to the new SBS 2003 server.

I can make all of this work manually by saving files and settings to
network
storage or a flash drive, but would really like to do it the most
efficient
way without adding user error by forgetting something, or just doing
things
in the wrong order.

Can anyone make suggestions?
