Many thanks to you both. That is what I had assumed, but not having
experience with that amount of memory, just wasn't sure. ...Wish my normal
"small" business customers had such bulging wallets!
Since getting things at short notice is difficult in Greece, I have to take
as much as I can with me, so whilst it might be stretching the
licensing/legality, I'll throw the Action Pack bundle into my bag and test
out the 64bit WS2k3 + VS2005 idea when I get there. If it works, then I can
order the retail software and fly out again.
Whilst its nice having a busman's holiday in northern Greece, I just wish it
wasn't the middle of winter!
Thanks for your help, once again!

That sounds more right than my reply SG. Got to thinking about this after
I posted and forgot that the max memory is related to the host OS, not the
OS in the VS instance. Thanks for setting it straight.

If the host OS is SBS it will only access the 4GB. Nothing you do in the
virtualisation will get around this.
This _might_ be a case of picking up what you can and trying something
new, virtualise the SBS.
Rather than Enterprise I'd look to putting a 64b version of Windows
Server on the box (assuming it's 64b, pretty safe I reckon) then either
Virtual Server or (more likely for me) VMWare Server.
or return the extra 2GB.

Just a thought...
- If SBS2k3 runs, can the extra memory over 4GB available be used by
any other applications or processes?
I think this depends on the OS you install for the VS2005 instance. If
you use Windows Server 2003 Enterprise, it will recognize up to 32 GB.
So, even though SBS 2003 will only recognize 4 GB, the (VS2005 with
Win2K3 server Enterprise) instance should see the full 6 GB.

With most clients, I'm continually balancing their empty wallets
against big ideas, so have never encountered this before and would
therefore value the insights of others.
As I understand it, SBS2k3 and R2 have a 4GB "maximum" memory limit.
However, does anyone know what happens if the sbs-box has more than 4GB
fitted?
- Will SBS2k3 install, or will the installation object and fail to
install?
- If the memory is added after the install, will SBS still run but just
not see or use the extra memory over 4GB?
- If SBS2k3 runs, can the extra memory over 4GB available be used by
any other applications or processes?
The background, is that a friend in Greece has twisted my arm to fly
out and install the server and network for him in a new business he has
set up. He's experienced with workstations, but not servers or
networks, whereas I have installed fifteen sbs2k3 networks and have a
server background from before sbs4.0. Unfortunately, George has done
his usual trick of overspecifying everything and has ordered 6GB of
RAM. The thinking was that he also needs to run Virtual Server 2005 on
the sbs-box - in order to run a business application that won't run
under SBS - so wanted adequate memory available.
The alternative to Virtual Server on the sbs-box would be Virtual
Server running on his separate storage server, but I'm not sure if the
licensing or storage server operating system would allow this.
Sorry for being vague, but until I arrive there next week I'm a bit in
the dark on the exact specifications and requirements - yet have to
prepare for the worst.
Thanks for any advice!
