Finally solved this one at the 11th hour! I noticed that the eventlog.txt
file was failing on the requirement for file "SBSMSI-Licensing.log" in
directory "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Integration\Windows Small Business
Server 2003\Logs\". The file was not in that directory but it was expected. I
also noticed that this file was created by the install in the usertemp
directory. I just copied it from the usertemp into the expected "logs"
directory and away she went .... Very wierd indeed. Wonder what is causing
that....

Yes, latest Bios and all drivers updated to 2003 versions. No it is not a.
Dell server, it is an ASUS AP1600R-S5:

FYI have tried uninstalling just about everything. Removed Trendmicro SMB,
Removed ISA server, got it down to pretty much the bare minimum, just
exchange still there.

Have you updated the BIOS on the server?
Is this a Dell server?

No it has never been renamed, am using "administrator" and even tried
setting
the password to the original one used for the installation years ago...

Or has the domain Administrator account been renamed?

PS. I also tried setting the temp folder variables to the big drive -
still
no joy, added another drive but cannot extend the boot volume as it
says
it
was created in an earlier version of windows &etc. FYI the machine is
a
dual
xeon, 4GB ram, SCSI duplex.

Thanks for your reply, I am not using WSUS and there is no option for
it
in
the setup. The install system is indicating that it needs a fraction
of
what
is available. Anyways I set everything in "component selection" to a
drive
with 23Gb free and everything in "data folders" also to same 23Gb
free-drive
but still bombs out with same error message. I have read all MS
release
notes
and complied (spacks, workarounds &etc), updated all drivers,
defraged
drives
&etc, all to no avail... going to have to restore original win2k
system
as
work begins on the 2nd .....

Hi Wayne,
I suspect that WSUS (et al) doesn't have enough room to install on
your C:
drive. You need at least 15GB of free space. If you can, try
specifying
another location for the WSUS stuff in the setup.

Am trying to upgrade a production version of SBS 2000 to 2003
using
the
Windows Small Business erver 2003 R2 Upgrade package. Spent a lot
of
time
reading this and other sites, and prepared accordingly. Nothing
complicated
on this server and all software/hardware meets MS Requirements.
The
first
part went smoothly, the server upgraded to Windows Server 2003
and
then
restarted. It is at step two that it keeps failing. I run the
continue
setup
icon and all goes ok (enter company info, auto password,
Component
Selection,
Data Folders,) until the point where I confirm the Component
Summary
with
"next". It immediately returns a prompt "A problem has been
encountered
while
installing the Setup Files. Cancelling Setup". I hit the only
option
"OK"
and
it returns the "Finishing Your Installation" dialog box with
errors.
I
have
5GB;s free on Boot drive and 20Gb free on data drive. Am now
stuck,
do I
restore my original server or press on and hope you guys can help
...
Thanks
