Re: Server keeps going to sleep

RE: "Why not use Remote Desktop, which is built-in and better in most

I understand that Remote Desktop (RDP) is a "limited" connection. There
are a number of applications (Backup Exec and VNC as two examples) that
do not recommend or allow you to install via RDP. Not that you should
be installing anything remotely on a server, but it tells you that
there are limitations to the RDP connection.

There are obvious pro's and con's to both RDP and VNC, but the one
thing about VNC that you can count on, is it's "sitting at the console"
emulation.

The right tool for the right job. I use both on my clients' servers.

My 2 cents.

I have a new Windows server running Windows Server 2003, to which I
have set up VNC which allows me to open a virtual desktop on the
server from home. The problem is that the server seems to go to
sleep during the night, such that I have to go into the office and
physically log on to the server in order to be able to talk to it
again from a remote location, or even from the local network. Is
there a configuration option on the server that I need to set so that
the server stays alive on the network all the time? There are two places that this could be set - in control panel | power, as
Cris suggested - and in the computer's BIOS power saving options.

Why not use Remote Desktop, which is built-in and better in most ways than
VNC?

All that said, note that you've posted in a Windows Small Business Server
2003 group - if you don't use SBS, try regular Windows server groups.
