Re: Workstations are going offline! Help!

Hi Dave - I had thought about the hardware, but it is puzzling that 3
machines out of 8 would have this problem, all at the same time. They all
are brand new machines & the server is brand new as well. Switch is brand new
also.

It is not only outlook that works great, it is IE, FTP, anything but
accessing the server as a domain member. No real errors in the server logs
that would relate to this.

A side note, on each affected workstation, when you reboot, the windows
update icon flashes in the sys tray for a second, then dissappears. upon
Startup, the windows startup sound plays, but then after a moment or two,
audio devices on the workstations do not function.

The symptoms are the exact same on all 3 machines, so I'm not sure it is a
bad switch port or something that would cause these symptoms....

Could it be a WSUS update that was applied to the PCs? I notice they are
all running ASP.NET 2.0 w/out 1.1 installed. Could that be the problem?

Have you looked at hardware - maybe a failing network switch or the server's
LAN NIC? I'm thinking that if the server ran normally for a couple of
weeks, and you didn't change any settings, hardware seems to be a likely
suspect.

I see what you're saying about Exchange/Outlook, but Outlook will appear to
work quite normally with an intermittent network connection.

Hi everyone - here is the scoop. New install of SBS 2003 R2, about two
weeks
old. Running exchange, ISA 2004, WSUS, & company web. Yesterday, one of
my
workstations exhibited the following symptoms - Cannot access server
shares,
Can Access Internet, Can use Outlook (exchange functions working fine),
workstation gets a little offline computer in the system tray & will not
reconnect to the network. I've logged on as administrator & the problem
exists still, no matter who is logged on to the workstation. If the
workstation is rebooted, normal operation resumes for a few moments, but
then, all of the sudden, network shares aren't accessible anymore. There
are
no crazy third party appz that are running. Just your standard SOHO
workstation w/Office & the typical appz.

Now, today I come in & three out of 8 users are exhibiting the exact same
symptom!!! So, here is an ipconfig all of the server & one of the
workstations. verything was working fine prior to yesterday....I think it
is
just crazy that exchange works, but other network functions dont? Oh
yeah,
Server is pingable from workstations by both name & IP. All workstations
in
our LAN are new machines, & so is the SBS box....everything seems to be
going
good but this & it is killing me!
