Hi dave thanks for your post
yes i have been looking at the StorageLoader VXA-172 this afternoon
(Tandburg seem to have taken Exabyte over). This seems to be a very cost
effective and suitable solution.
In total can take 860GB (10 x 86GB tapes), can can be electronically
upgraded to twice that capacity.
Given our max HD capacity is 220GB, then this seems to be a solution will
will last us for some considerable time.
was this the sort of thing you were referring to

Exabyte is another good option for tape. I've got two of them and they've
been reliable over the past 2 years or so. The big plus is that you can
buy the tape capacity you need, then if you outgrow, just buy bigger tapes
rather than replacing the whole drive.
Have you seen these? Dell makes one too (or probably more accurately
markets a rebranded version of this).

Ive sold a couple of the dell 400/800 ultriums and they are GREAT! DAT
flat out sucks, I've only been a fan of DLT or Ultirum but with the
latest price drop you can get an external pretty cost effective. I
wouldn't put it in a workstation but get an external and attach ot your
2850 at about $3000 and you can easily carry it over to your next server
and have it last you 5 + years. Everything I sell server related I shoot
for a 5 year life and since external can be easily moved to another
server, a big plus.

Hi we currently have a DAT72 drive built into our Poweredge 2850 rack
server. Unfortunately we can only get about 40GB backed up and this is
now not enough.
There are all sorts of options I know but the three being suggested are:
1. Get a new rack mount with a further DAT72 drive in it and transfer
the driver for the serve to this mount, effectively doubling the
capacity.
2. getting a new rackmount but with a single LTO 2LC tape drive which
would give me 400GB Native
3. Putting a LTO2OC tape drive into one of our workstations and using
that to undertake the back up (is that viable from a networking point of
view?)
Other suggestions much appreciated - we need to back up about 50GB at
the moment rising to 100GB in say 18 months
Thanks
Alex
