YEP, 100% correct.
If an SBS wiz can do what you want you should use it. Before attempting
anything an SBS wiz cannot do you should check back here, see if it causes
any issue.
I very recently picked up a client where some 'non-standard' (as far as SBS
goes) things have been done, things which 'corporate' or 'enterprise' admins
have plastered all over their blogs. The systems are in reasonable state, no
specific problems, but I'm concerned about a few things implemented as
consequence to not following 'SBS rules'. It's actually been rather
enlightening for me, I can see how logic and exploration led to the changes,
but I keep shakin' m' head and saying 'I see bad juju in this, do you mind
if I undo those changes?'.

Thanks. That's the order I followed and it seems to be working fine. Now
from
what I have been reading I just need to remember to use the wizards when I
manage this box.

I would perform the full install from CD's before updating the server in
any
way. Completing the R2 installation will also set up WSUS and cause it to
start syncing to MS.
These days I count on putting the server together and performing the
install
to completion, then let it sit there, pull in WSUS files (force a sync
manually), let the server update itself. Well, actually, I'd probably
break
WSUS temporarily, have it sync to my server rather than MS, but not
everyone
has the bloated WSUS I have, my WSUS downloads _all_ items. I do this
because I can then connect at network speed from the new server to mine.
This means a delay if you stick to your guns and don't allow external
access
till the server is fully up-to-date, couple of different scenarios.
1) They never had SBS. OK, they won't miss what they never had for a
couple
of days.
2) They are coming to R2 from some previous version of SBS. In my case
this
would _hopefully_ include migration of a current WSUS content folder,
delay
should be minimal.
One area of concern is mail. You need to open SMTP to the server if you
are
operating using it. R2 includes Exchange SP2, I'm comfortable opening 25
incoming for the short period where it is necessary but possibly
undesirable.

Huh, didn't notice that but you're absolutely right. I stand corrected.

It's in the TechNet note on installing the Technologies CD. It states
"You
can install the R2 Technologies before you install the Premium
Technologies,
but it is recommended that you install the R2 Technologies after you
have
installed the Premium Technologies." I have also read it other places
but
don't know where. I have done so much reading on installing this. I
have
read
both the SBS Unleashed book and the new R2 Admin companion book as
well
as
several blogs and websites. I just want to make sure its set up right
the
first time. Even though I have setup many (understatement) Windows
Standard
with Exchange Server on midsized networks this is my first SBS Server.

Sorry, you are absolutely right regarding Outlook on the 5th CD; I
am
definitely wrong. You are right the SP SP2 is on the R2 CD as well
as
ExchSP2. You can install both from a CD or from WU. So install R2 CD
and THEN
go to WU. But I believe SP/Exchange should have all updates applied
and
all
R2 features integrated before installing ISA 2004.
I suggested R2 Tech CD before Premium CD to get the "base" OS+SBS R2
features installed first then updated before installing ISA 2004 and
SQL
2005. If you prefer to install Premium CD before R2 based on
something
you
read and feel thats the way to do it then I'm *pretty sure* that's
OK
too.
Where did you read this?

R2 Technologies is the 5th CD-Premium 1&2 CDs are ISA

SharePoint is on the 5th CD-you've already installed it. That's
why
its
update displays in WU.
"Shane" wrote:
When I go to install the updates it wants to install SharePoint
Services
Service pack two. This is on the technologies CD and from
everything I have
read I should install the premium stuff before I do this.

From the To Do list, select "Connect to the Internet" and do
all
that to get
connected. Then go to Windows Update as many times as needed
until all
updates are applied. Then go one last time to WU and update to
Microsoft
Update and apply any updates from there. Then load the Premium
Technologies
CD and after that's all done, go back to MU again; there will
be
more updates
available. Then Finish the To Do List as needed.
FYI- I you select the "Custom" button instead of "Express" in
WU/MU you'll
see a list of all the available updates; High
Priority/Security
Updates,
Optional Software Updates and Optional Hardware Updates. Stay
away from
Hardware Updates unless you know what you're doing; vendors
sometimes release
buggy drivers.
