Re: SBS2003 r2 mail server problems

sorry bud here it goes:

itcdeltacom - t1 account
15 client pcs all running ms office 2k and xp PRO
server sbs2003 r2

they are currently connecting to the provider deltacom pulling mail via
their server and then using the server as a workgroup storage
repository.

I am going to change everything over to a client/server domain, raoming
profiles, etc...along with a sonicwall for VPN then remote desktop
through the vpn to use the remote profile capabilities. now the only
thing I havent figured out is the mail. I want to have a "local"
server to handle the mail so roaming profiles will work streamline.
also they are going to use a mcaffee AV solution.

so now I think the best thing to do would be setup the mail server then
move over the mx record, but I am still hanging onto the idea of cross
replicating and not moving the mx record over. if this helps you out
great if not, ask what else you need to know. but I am leaning more
towards setting up the mail server and moving the mx record jsut
becasue it would make the mail server an in house issue and easier
management but then again "if it aint broke dont fix it" kinda thing
makes me want to replicate, whats the best way to handle this, knowing
that they want roaming profiles and vpn support....setting it up and
moving the mx record OR the other solution.

thanks again

zach

To be honest, we very well may be misunderstanding your question....but
it's because your question contains very little information, and the
information that it does contains is *extremely* confusing and
contradictory.

To truly answer your question intelligently we'd need to know a heck of
a lot more about the clients situation. So I guess the answer at the
moment to that question would be 'whatever is best for the clients
situation'.

The 'mail server' as you call it (it's just *normal* Exchange! Which
you said you'd worked on before!) will handle any scenario you wish to
throw at it.

That may not be the most helpful answer you've ever gotten, but if
anyone gives you a definitive straight answer based upon what you've
given us, then I'd run away from that person as fast as I could.

Using the POP3 connector to 'replicate'? Then I wouldn't generally be
in favor, but there *are* situations in which it'd be appropriate.
Using a good dns configuration and advanced isp capabilities to create
a good backup mx situation utilizing smtp? Different opinion entirely.
Client has a modem link to the internet, well now that would make a
difference. You say T1 througout your post, but you call the ISP "T1"
so I have no idea if you are talking about the name of a company or the
type of connectivity they have, or both.
