Hey, it's a matter of Opinion..
As a Paid Consultant, "I feel" it's sloppy and unprofessional..
And I don't do Sloppy work... (Sorry I set a high bar for myself)
You don't "feel" that way, that's fine... It's just an Opinion.
Everyone has one....
Mine is just different than yours...

A fact-limited understanding isn't a good basis on which form opinion (paid for or otherwise)- or people will know the type of bar you are at(!) (joke)
My point, maybe lost, is that 'opinion' should be based on all the facts and as this is computing (pretty much a set of absolutes with many many choices) arguments often fail when actual facts get analysed.
You tried with some points but they were inaccurate. So if opinion is based on incorrect facts then what of the opinion?:
- Open relay blocking is an SMTP issue - POP3 doesn't relay anything. SMTP is a push protocol and the 'relay' is where you are pushed volumes of email that are then pushed back out (relayed) by exchange.
- IMF still functions with a 'proper' pop3 connector or script as that supplies Exchange via SMTP; note that IMF is not a great solution - the Outlook spam filter outperforms it, though its better than nothing.
- Trend RBL - you mean anti-spam based on IP list - I'm guessing Trend is what you use, however common spam solutions (e.g. GFI mail essentials) perform all the IMF functions plus that of Trend before the mail hits Exchange and run with POP3.
- "Is a big Advantage having your MX Records changed" - not sure what this means really - the big plus of POP3 is that you can collect mail anywhere without any change of records.
But the POP point will be lost, again, - Is SMTP preferred? - I say yes, *always* - (re-read that if you have doubts!) but the actual technical differences are not argued out or understood properly by the majority I see commenting.
