Well to be fair the POP3 Connectors purpose wasn't a permanent

Once a Server is setup fully the POP3 Connector is intended to be
dropped (Because SMTP is much better.)
Also realize that the POP3 connection is sending logins and
passwords over the WAN in Plain Text.

I always wonder at that oft repeated 'transitional' reason (excuse)
for poor MS implementation.
POP3 is a permanent email protocol used by millions (billions?) every
day -
Yes. Millions or billions of mail *clients*.
who aren't transitioning to anywhere. The fact that a server is
running a POP3 collection should make no difference.
Sure. POP connectors are a kluge. Mail servers are supposed to communicate
with each other using SMTP - not POP3. Turning a mail server into a mail
*client* is not how it was intended to work.
Take our friend Outlook - it can collect every minute (if required)
using multiple accounts.
Yes, because it's a mail *client*.
Yet the server based connector struggles.
There is no actual reason why SBS POP3 can't be permanent -
Sure....if you want to put up with its deficiencies.
the fact
that the software is poor simply reinforces the 'transitional' idea.
Yes, we all know the benefits of SMTP etc. etc. and I advocate it but
simply repeating that POP3 mail is transitional in itself is an
excuse. There are actually quite a few benefits of keeping POP3 which
I never hear mentioned.
Others besides myself spend a lot of time in the Exchange newsgroups,
refuting those arguments and educating people about how SMTP mail is
designed to work.
Some SBS shops can only use POP3 for various reasons so it will always
be around. The bottom line is POP3 with SBS is fine - just dump the
connector and get a nice 3rd party one if you want it done correctly.
Sure....such as POPBeamer, which hands the mail over to the server via
SMTP....works a lot better.
Many have no experience of these add-ins and don't realise how good
they are (curing issues like the CC / BCC one).
Can POP3 be authenticated? - yes with SPA - but when was the last case
of someone hacking POP3 mail over the WAN anyway?
There's no 'hacking' involved. The credentials are sent in clear text over
the internet for all to see.
