Moving to SMTP from POP3

SBS2k3 standard, fully patched and sp'd.

I'm in the process of planning a client's move from POP3
connector to SMTP on their SBS box.

My question is:-

Can I set up the SMTP virtual server to run in parallel with
the pop3 connector and leave that running with server in
production, until the ISP gets around to sorting out the DNS
MX records for us, without any adverse effects?
